Creating Destiny, Wade Nomura
A powerful story of overcoming adversity and embracing opportunities by humanitarian and BMX champion Wade Nomura.
Wade tells the story of his early life as a Japanese American growing up in the shadow of World War II, viewed with suspicion in the land his family called home for generations. He struggles to find his place in the world as his family grapples with the scars of internment in the Arizona desert for their ancestry.
A chance encounter led to the start of an award-filled career as a BMX racer, living life on the road and giving all for the glory of the win.
His life takes another turn when he falls into a life of service, taking him around the globe from the slums of India to helping those in need in Mexico to hurricane-devastated Puerto Rico. He reflects on his role as Mayor of his hometown facing down the aftermath of some of the largest wildfires in California history and the perils of the global coronavirus pandemic.
A life of twists and turns, adversity, triumph, leadership, love and loss, Wade’s story is an inspirational journey not to be missed.

Wade Nomura’s book Creating Destiny is a work of art.
In these days of Black Lives Matter, it is easy for a black person to believe no one is as persecuted as he is. Reading Wade’s book was so enlightening and also tends to shed light on some of the failings of our educational system, such that self-revelation is the only thing that makes one believe that others care enough about to have recounted his people’s history. But this book did more than spotlight some of the atrocities foisted on our citizens of Japanese ancestry during that dark period in our country’s history.
The book revealed the man who is Wade Nomura; the grandson, son, brother, husband, father, community servant, humanitarian, – all par excellence. Wade weaves his story with as much patience as he takes to create the intricacies of a Japanese Garden and shows how sensitive and in touch he is with his feelings. He paints pictures like an artist and then gives us the background of the pictures; working behind the lens is a natural progression for one so committed to understanding how things work, orchestrating the settings, to finally touching the results. Wade needs to be cloned! Perhaps he already has been, given the number and variety of projects into which he has immersed his energy, caring, and talents. Incredible it is to see that he also takes time to have fun and indulge a passion or many passions. Settle down in a hammock when you start to read! You will need to be relaxed to absorb these fascinating stories.

Creating Destiny is a fascinating and compelling story of Wade Nomura, a man who excels at everything he attempts, whether in work or sports competition, but finds true meaning in giving. “I believe the greatest asset we possess is kindness and compassion,” he reflects. His story tells us of our better selves if we, like him, can find within ourselves a kind and generous heart.

As a fellow Rotarian, we look at the qualities of an individual who displays “service above self”. Truly the life story of Wade Nomura is a journey from humble beginnings to a person of purpose for the greater good. I think we all need examples and mentors of people who follow joy, take life with a grain of salt, and want to make an impact. This book will warm your heart to what’s possible through seeking what makes us the happiest, content with the hand that’s dealt and lifts others along the way.

As my family can attest, I have not read a book from beginning to end in probably a decade. I am just too busy “juggling life”. Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop. Every spare moment I had my eyes were on the pages. Each chapter could have been a story itself. Wade is a role model I can relate to as we both come from humble beginnings and have overcome the challenges of being different. His life story is admirable, inspirational, and shows the true meaning of a humanitarian.

I was flabbergasted with the amazing stories in Creating Destiny. I sat down and read the whole thing in one sitting (although I did take a bathroom break). Wade has lived three lifetimes in one, touching lives close to home and abroad. It’s beautifully written and appeals to all ages, and not just Rotarians. It’s a roadmap of success and giving.
